iFixit Magnetic Project Mat
“Lost a screw once during an iPhone teardown and spent 20 minutes looking for it. Got this mat the next day. Never lost one since.”
— Object Opened
A magnetic work surface from iFixit designed for electronics repair. Write directly on the mat with a dry-erase marker to label screw positions and steps. The magnetic surface holds even the tiniest screws in place so nothing gets lost during complex teardowns.
- Magnetic surface holds screws exactly where you place them
- Rewritable dry-erase surface for labeling screw positions
- Large enough for full phone, laptop, or tablet teardowns
- Designed by iFixit specifically for electronics repair
When to use it
Set this up before you remove the first screw. Label each section with the step number or component — modern phones can have 20+ screws of different sizes and mixing them up means a bad reassembly.
What it replaces
Ice cube trays, sticky tape, or labeled bags work in a pinch but are slower and less reliable. A magnetic mat is the professional approach.

It depends on the device. Phones and laptops are generally safe if you disconnect the battery first. Power electronics (chargers, power supplies) can retain dangerous voltage in capacitors — always discharge them before touching anything inside. Wear safety glasses when prying open enclosures.
